The Indian Plumbing Association (IPA) will work under an agreement with the government to raise public awareness about water waste, promote the introduction of water-saving devices and the recovery of used water.

In a statement Monday, the industry association said it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Water Mission (NWM) and the Ministry of Jal Shakti to work on various parameters to reduce water waste and its reuse in Minimize India.

NWM is one of eight government missions launched under the National Climate Change Action Plan (NAPCC) to address the threats of global warming, IPA said.

The Pact’s goals include “facilitating and promoting public education, awareness and outreach programs, and water stewardship.” The focus will be on the circular economy of water, including the use of gray water (5Rs: Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Replenish and respect) in the built environment. In addition, knowledge-based information on water saving and water use efficiency as well as monitoring water consumption, especially in urban areas, should be exchanged.

In addition, the MoU aims to develop a framework to optimize water use, including by increasing water use efficiency by 20 percent and regulating electricity tariffs.

Last week IPA President Gurmit Singh Arora met Goa Prime Minister Pramod Sawant for the Center of International Plumbing Practices (COIPP), a plumbing laboratory to be established at the Goa Engineering College.

“The panel suggested to the Prime Minister of Goa that buildings should be subject to regular water testing, which can result in huge water savings as it helps identify problem areas… The CM has given its full support,” the panel said.
