SIOUX CITY — With demand for its products strong, a wholesaler on Gordon Drive is undergoing a major expansion.

Sioux Center, Iowa-based Plumbing & Heating Wholesale began work on a 21,000-square-foot expansion of its building at 840-844 Gordon Dr. in June of this year, said Mike Plasier, CEO of Plumbing & Heating Wholesale and manager of the closely related firm of Pla-Cor, which owns many of the properties where Pluming & Heating Wholesale operates.

The addition, which will be used primarily as warehousing for equipment, pipe and other products, should be move-in ready by February of next year, Plasier said.

The existing cement block structure at 844 Gordon Dr. is probably most familiar as Central Kitchen & Bath, which is a retail showroom for luxury products operated by Plumbing & Heating Wholesale; Pla-Cor Inc. purchased the building, formerly a Staples, in 2012. Plumbing & Heating Wholesale, a distributor whose customers are primarily plumbing and HVAC contractors, industrial outfits, institutions and the like, operates out of the same building, but from the 840 Gordon Dr. address.

Nearly two years ago, Plumbing & Heating Wholesale purchased the longtime Sioux City industrial wholesaler Wigman Company, which has operated out of an aging brick structure at 313 Perry St., along West Fourth Street, for decades. The Wigman building is currently on the market, Plasier said, but until the new building is finished, Wigman’s employees will continue working there.

“We’re working to expand Wigman’s business,” Placier said.

“Demand is good in Sioux City for industrial products,” he added. “There’s a lot of industrial facilities that either new new product or need maintenance, and that’s the customer that Wigman has traditionally served very well.”

Once the expansion is finished, Wigman’s operations and employees will move to the warehouse on Gordon Drive, “to be connected with the rest of our business,” Plasier said.

“The facility that they’re in, while it’s served them well for over 100 years — is not very efficient, and it’s getting tired, and we didn’t need to have two facilities located a mile and a half apart from each other,” Plasier said of the old Wigman property, which is just west of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

The new warehousing space will take some of the strain off Plumbing & Heating Wholesale’s main distribution site in Sioux Center. For the same reason, they’re also building a facility in Sioux Falls.

“Because we’re out of space here, adding this capacity will take a little pressure off of that,” Plasier said.
