HOWARDSVILLE, Va. — For more than 70 years a Howardsville, Virginia man has been living with no running water or indoor plumbing, but on Wednesday that changed.

Thomas Reid was all smiles this morning as he opened the doors to his brand new home. Thanks to the Loudoun County Habitat for Humanity, Reid can now enjoy working sinks, bathrooms and running water.

Thomas has lived in this log cabin in Howardsville, since he was born, 70 years ago.

The cabin was built in the 18th century and belonged to Reid’s great-great-grandfather.

All his life, he lived with no indoor plumbing or running water despite living in one of the most affluent counties in the nation.

Today, about 10 residents are left in the tiny town of Howardsville, which was established by former slaves.
