A recent exam report for Leeds College of Building ‘technical’ level 2 and 3 plumbing qualifications shows exceptional results for 2023.

The overall pass rate for the exam element of the City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate in Plumbing Studies at the college was 100%, compared to a national average of 87%, with 40% of students achieving a distinction grade.

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Plumbing Studies at Leeds College of Building also achieved an impressive 94% pass rate, compared to the national average of just 58%.

A total of 80 students are taking the Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications at the college. The practical assessment of these qualifications will be published by the City & Guilds awarding body in the summer.

Alistair Mitchell, Curriculum Manager for Plumbing Studies at Leeds College of Building said:

“We have a great team running these courses and together with hardworking and dedicated students have achieved these excellent results. I am extremely proud of all my staff and students and on behalf of other managers and leaders I thank them for their pursuit of excellence and for making Leeds College of Building one of the top plumbing education providers in the region.”
Students who have completed both technical and practical examinations are now completing the employer involvement element of their qualifications. The work serves to prepare for further education, entry into professional life, training and other positive goals.

The promotion of qualified plumbers is encouraging news after the latest UK Trade Skills Index for 2023, which pointed to an “alarming” skills gap in the construction sector, with plumbing being one of the hardest-hit occupations. Commissioned by Checkatrade and compiled by Capital Economics, the index estimated that the UK would need 73,700 new plumbers by 2032.

Leeds College of Building has a strong reputation for plumbing education. It currently offers courses for school leavers as well as adults who wish to retrain or further their education from Level 1 to Level 3. The college also offers plumbing and heating apprenticeships.
