As the temperatures outside grow colder, Iowa American Water is offering tips to help protect plumbing systems during the winter season.
DAVENPORT, Iowa — Winter is here and as temperatures trend cooler, Iowa American Water is offering tips for homeowners to protect their plumbing and water meters.
“Taking preventive steps at the onset of colder temperatures can help to protect our customers from unexpected repair costs, frustration, and higher water bills this winter season,” Brad Nielsen, the vice president of operations at Iowa American Water, said in a press release.
Here is what the water company recommends:
- Find where the main water shut-off valve is in the home. In the case a leak is found or a pipe breaks, knowing where this valve is will prevent flooding in the house.
- Once the shut-off valve is found and marked, it’s also important to check pipes that pass through unheated spaces — like garages, basements or crawlspaces — and wrap any exposed pipes in foam sleeves or heat tape. Also, take note of where faucets and sinks are located in the home, and during the winter open the cabinets to let in warmer air. Allow a small trickle of water to run overnight to prevent pipes from freezing. The water can be collected in a tub or bucket and can be used for other purposes (i.e. watering plants).
- Homeowners are encouraged to disconnect any garden hoses and turn off irrigation systems. If the family is taking an extended trip, homeowners should keep the temperature in the home around 55 degrees.
If pipes do freeze over, customers are discouraged from thawing their pipes, especially with kerosene heaters or open flames. Instead, keep a slow drip of water flowing through faucets and shut off the water service if a pipe is frozen.
Any broken, frozen or leaking pipes can be reported through the Iowa American Water website.
