The event began in the morning with guest speaker J. Tom Morgan, author of Ignorance is No Defense: A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law, speaking to students about state laws and the consequences of violating them.

Each student was then given the opportunity to choose four out of nine available topics, ranging from car and home maintenance to personal safety, and spent the rest of the school day traveling to their various stations to learn about each topic . Each session lasted 45 minutes, allowing students to learn as much as possible about their chosen topic. This year’s stops included:

  • Parenting: Changing and caring for a baby, and information about medical conditions such as Shaken Baby Syndrome and how to avoid them

  • Banking: the basics of taxes, saving for the future, budgeting, and other money-related advice

  • Culinary Arts: a hands-on lesson in making omelettes and french toast

  • Personal safety: situational awareness and how to protect yourself

  • Car Maintenance: All the basics of car care and maintenance

  • Home maintenance: steps to perform basic sheetrock, plumbing, and electrical work

  • Health Science: basic first aid including emergency splints, stopping a bleeding wound, using an AED, using an epi pen, helping someone who is choking, and performing CPR

  • Life hacks: how to iron, fold a fitted sheet, tie a tie, properly set a table, or sew a loose button on a shirt

After completing each of their four chosen stations, the seniors then reunited to celebrate and have fun together.

Dawson County High School CTAE coordinator Amy Smith said she was grateful for the many adult volunteers, both from the school and from community businesses, who helped make the event possible.

“I’m grateful to all of our volunteers who come out to help with this,” Smith said.

Smith added that she is pleased with the turnout for this year’s Growing Up Day and hopes it will continue to grow each year.

“By the time we do it four times, word of mouth will spread that Coming of Age Day is fun, and I think we’ll keep growing,” Smith said.
