TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — The cold weather can wreak havoc on plumbing if precautions are not taken.

Water can freeze inside a pipe, causing the pipe to expand and burst.

“So first thing, is make sure you don’t turn your utilities off if you’re going to be out of town,” Chris Garrison, the owner and CEO of Absolute Cleaning and Restoration, said. “You want to have your heat setting at 70 [degrees] if you’re gonna be out of town. Leave your cabinet doors open, any vanity or kitchen cabinet doors so that you can get to the water lines.”

Insulating exposed pipes, such as in attics and basements, is another way to provide protection during the colder months.

George Booth III, the owner of Tupelo Ace Hardware, said there are several items — such as foam insulation and outdoor faucet coverings — that can be purchased.

Call a plumber as soon as possible in the event a pipe does burst.
