CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) -Following a basement filled with water, a Cleveland senior is not facing a massive bill to repair the pipe.

“I can not pay that; I’m not working. I’m 93 years old,” said Edna Crenshaw.

Crenshaw says the basement accumulated nearly a foot of water last month.

“The flooding came up from the drain under the sink, and my grandson discovered it; he said,’ Grandma, your basement is flooded with water,’” said Crenshaw.

She called a plumber, assuming she had a problem with her washer or dryer, but was told the block was further down the pipe.

Crenshaw explains Roto-Rooter Plumbing and Drain Serice found a break in the pipe under the sidewalk in front of her home, but when the repair was done, she was hit with a bill for over $11,000.

“I don’t think it’s my fault; I really don’t know anything about going down underneath the ground,” said Crenshaw.

She believes the work required a fix on a city pipe and does not think the bill should fall back on her, so she called 19 Troubleshooters.

19 News called Roto-Rooter to find out more about the work and left a message.

The next call was to the Department of Aging, who told Crenshaw she may be able to use money set aside for work done on the homes of seniors.

The director of the department said she would look into exactly whose plumbing it was, Crenshaw’s or the city’s, and if it was Crenshaw’s, could she get the work covered. The department is still looking into the matter.

The City of Cleveland’s Division of Water Pollution Patrol to find out if the repair was done correctly and investigate the original problem.
