Campbell County High School students can expect less shutdowns due to plumbing issues in the upcoming school year.

In the next few weeks, workers from Clearwater Contracting will repair the school’s main sewer line with a cured-in-place method, said Sean Mathes, Campbell County School District building and grounds supervisor. The method will reline the old pipes with an epoxy and fabric liner at the cost of about $200,000.

Mathes said workers will start the project either the first or second week in August and it will take about one week for the repairs. The goal is for the repairs to be completed before school begins Aug. 21.

Specialists came out to the school Friday to look at the aged pipes.

“The mainlines have a lot of scale buildup and blockages,” Mathes said. “Debris, pens, pencils. They’re in pretty bad shape.”

The workers will first clean out the pipes before relining them with the resin and fabric mixture. Since the method is a trench-less pipe repair, Mathes said it shouldn’t be much of a disturbance to anyone in the building.

The temporary fix should help the sewer line last a few more years but it won’t address the issues with branch pipelines that extend to the bathrooms.

“We’ll still expect some shut down just with the repair not reaching those branch lines,” Mathes said. “But it should help alleviate most problems and issues so they’re not as severe.”

Sewer issues were a problem throughout the school year, leading to individual bathrooms or floors shutting down. In a letter to the Wyoming School Facilities Commission and State Construction Department, local officials cited bathrooms being shut down throughout the school a total of 15-18 times last year.
