During the shutdown, Santam saw a 35% increase in plumbing damage in the Gauteng area.

Santam, South Africa’s largest short-term insurer, said it saw a significant increase in plumbing damage from customers in the Gauteng region during the water lockdown in Johannesburg last week. Those are just the claims for the few days of official closure to allow Rand Water to maintain the city’s water infrastructure.

Some areas in Johannesburg remained without water for a few days after the closure ended, although flow has now returned to normal in most areas.

“During the shutdown, we saw a 35 percent increase in water utility claims in the Gauteng area. However, we cannot provide detailed statistics on what was solely due to the water stop or the cold weather,” Santam replied to News24’s questions.
