FISHERSVILLE, Va. (WHSV) – With the temperatures dropping, you can do a few things to make sure your pipes do not freeze.

Robert Vailes, Co-owner of Vailes Home Improvement, said if your pipes are prone to freezing, leave your faucets dripping.

“When you hit the cold weather, you may need to leave some cabinet doors open if you have a kitchen sink or bathroom sink,” said Vailes.

If you are in a situation where your pipes do freeze, leave the faucet on, but leave the pipes alone. Vailes said if you try to unthaw the pipes too quickly it can cause more damage.

”You can get under there and cause more issues than if you just leave it alone, let it thaw, and know where your main water shut off valve is, so if does thaw and water starts to come off in the house you can turn if off quickly,” said Vailes.

Vailes Home Improved has received calls for plumbing and heating systems issues. Samantha Vailes, Service Manager, said staff has received more calls for heating issues.

Samantha Vailes said staff is preparing to receive more calls this week due to the weather.

“We always keep our technicians with a full schedule but we always make sure we put in a buffer just to have them in case we do receive those influx of calls so we can make sure we service people especially those in an emergency situation,” said Samantha Vailes.

Robert Vailes recommended having your heating system serviced as soon as you can as it will help your system run through the stress of cold temperatures. You should also clean your air filters, so the air flow does not get restricted.
