If you’re planning to buy major home appliances like a dishwasher, washing machine, or even an ice maker, you probably won’t rush the purchase. Chances are you’ll do your research by comparing features and prices online, asking around for brand recommendations, and looking at floor models at your local hardware store.
When you are concentrating on the exact device you want to get, you should also consider the timing. The best time to buy gadgets may be when you have to wait a little longer to make your purchase, but if you want a great deal it’s definitely worth the wait.
We asked experts in the home appliance industry to give us their top tips on when is the best time to buy an appliance, when to avoid buying it, and how to get the best possible deal.
When is the best time to buy a new device?
When you’ve done the legwork and are ready to buy a device, consider this your cue to pause and set a calendar reminder so you can buy it when prices are next expected.
“The best time to buy a new device often coincides with sales holidays like Memorial Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Labor Day,” says Maria J. Silva, owner and editor of the device blog OvenWave. “Additionally, the end of the year, around December, is a good time to buy equipment as retailers may offer clearance sales to make room for new stock.”
If the device you are considering is seasonal, you can also schedule the purchase for a time when demand for the product is low.
“For example, if you need a new air conditioner and you can wait until winter starts, you’re likely to get a much better deal than buying it in July or August,” says Forrest McCall, co-owner of hardware store Blog Mama Needs a Project.
When is the worst time to buy a new device?
While many sales holidays fall during the warmer months, this time can also see higher prices and stock issues on certain models if all your neighbors are also planning their household upgrades.

“The worst time to buy appliances is usually when demand is high, such as spring and summer when homeowners do frequent renovations,” says Silva. “During this peak season, prices are higher due to increased demand, limited availability and fewer promotional offers.”
While it can be tempting to buy a brand new, top-of-the-line device when your current model is old and outdated, you might want to think twice before hitting the buy button on an article that has just come out.
“In my opinion, the worst time to buy equipment is when it’s new to the market,” said Dave Bringer, owner and CEO of Bringer Appliance Repair. “While they sometimes come with nice discounts and features, they also occasionally have flaws. Take the time to do market testing and evaluation before you commit.”
How does a device discount work?
Many retailers and brands incentivize consumers with discounts on their devices – these are refunds or rebates given to the shopper after making a qualifying purchase.
According to Silva, these are the steps to finding and claiming a discount:

Before making a purchase, check the manufacturer’s website or contact the retailer to find out if discounts are available for the specific device or brand you’re interested in.

Purchase the eligible device during the specified discount period. Make sure you meet all requirements, e.g. B. Model numbers, dates of purchase and documentation required to qualify for the discount.

After the purchase, you submit the required documents, including the original purchase receipt, a completed rebate form, and sometimes the serial number of the device. Usually you can submit the documents online or by mail.

The manufacturer or a third party will review the submitted documentation to verify eligibility. This process can take several weeks. Once approved, the refund amount will be processed.

Once the verification process is complete, you will receive the refund as a check, prepaid card, or direct deposit, depending on the manufacturer’s procedure.
What other ways are there to save on household appliances?
If you’re shopping in-store and more interested in getting a bargain than a fancy, just-released item, ask the staff at the home appliance experts about their open-box units or refurbished floor-standing models.
“Although they may only be used for display purposes or have minor visual imperfections, these items are typically fully functional and come with manufacturer warranties,” says Skylar Christensen, sales manager at Beehive Plumbing.
Also, shopping in-store and being able to discuss the condition of the sale floor models can reduce some of the worries you might have when buying something you haven’t seen. “Before refurbished devices are offered for sale, they often go through a rigorous testing process and are repaired back to working order,” he says.
While saving money on a first purchase may be your top priority, also keep in mind that certain investments may be more economical in the long run.
“When buying equipment, it’s important to consider factors beyond just price. Evaluate energy efficiency ratings to ensure long-term cost savings on electricity bills,” says Silva.
