In the heart of Beckley, on Robert C. Byrd Drive, a small corner shop with high quality gadgets has recently opened its doors.
Operated by owners Robert Powell and Eric Farley, Rely Appliances got a foothold over the holiday season when orders started pouring in. Partners recognized a need in the community and set about filling this vacuum.
The intrepid duo both hail from West Virginia, so they have a keen understanding of the state and its culture.
“I grew up in Beckley,” Powell said. “I went to Central Elementary, Beckley-Stratton and Woodrow. I’m from this area.
“I saw a need here for someone to carry quality used equipment and someone to carry new equipment that was built in America,” Powell said.
Farley added: “We stock used machines from GE and Maytag, pretty much all the top household brands. We are one of the few Speed Queen dealers in the area.”
“This is sort of our golden child,” Powell said.
Speed Queen is the brand name for an efficient, high-performance washer-dryer set, the two claim. In addition to these proclamations, Speed Queen is also said to boast a 25-year life expectancy, which comes in addition to a three, five, or seven-year parts and labor warranty.
“Actually, I’m the one doing the repairs,” Powell said.
“It’s fortunate that Robert knows so much about the machines,” said Farley.
They are adamant about their commitment to customer service.
“If you call here you can speak to one of the owners. We take care of everything ourselves,” Farley said.
Rely Appliance is affiliated with a sister shop called Stuff and Things.
“Originally there was going to be a barber shop on the other end, but when that fell through we decided to take over the whole building so we could know who our neighbors were,” Powell said.
Stuff and Things sells handmade wicks, candles, lotions, creams and a variety of other knick-knacks. The building also has a party room that can comfortably accommodate up to 35 people but can expand this capacity up to 50 people if required.
Rely Appliance is located at 3679 Robert C. Byrd Drive and is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They are closed on Sundays.
