France pays towards appliance repairs to save planet

Repairs to fridges, phones, laptops, TVs and a range of other household appliances are set to be subsidized by the French state to curb waste by encouraging people to keep their old gadgets longer.

Starting next month, the scheme, which President Macron’s government is calling a European first, will save €15 on repairing a vacuum cleaner, €25 on a mobile phone or washing machine and €45 on a laptop.

The money comes from a fund now worth 410 million euros, which was created from an environmental tax imposed on manufacturers of new consumer goods two years ago. The program includes state-registered workshops, of which there are only 500 out of 20,000 in France. Next
