Workers make progress restoring the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts after significant water damage from a broken sprinkler head.

The damage occurred on Christmas Eve and was mostly on the north side of the facility.

“Toilets and the lobby area suffered the most damage from the flooding,” said Jerry Danforth, director of facilities for the city of Amarillo. “Fortunately, we were able to react quickly and minimize the damage. Repair and restoration work is in progress. The City firmly believes that the facility will be restored to its existing level, if not better. The Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts will once again be an outstanding facility for the public.”

The total cost of rehabilitating the building is approximately $950,000, including the cost of sanitation and flood rehabilitation.

Most of the costs are covered by insurance. The city has a $250,000 deductible that comes from the city insurance fund.

The full restoration of the Globe News Center will take four to five months.

“The goal is to be up and running by the end of March and able to run some events,” Danforth said.
