Where Is Michigan’s Tallest Tree Located?

Recently, one of my Facebook friends took a trip to California to do some exploring and hiking.

When they came back and put pictures online I was blown away by what I saw.

They had several stunning pictures of giant sequoias.

Lots of giants sequoias are between 250 and 300 feet tall, with the tallest being about 325 feet tall.

After seeing these pictures I wanted to book a trip to California asap to see them in person. I also wondered where in Michigan I could find the tallest tree.

As I searched for the answer, I ran into a small problem.

Two places in Michigan claim to have the tallest tree

According to the Michigan Botanical Club, the tallest known tree in Michigan is a Lenawee County blue ash at 155 feet tall

However, that record was recently challenged by a remote Upper Peninsula white pine, which was crowned Michigan’s tallest tree in 2021 at a height of 166 feet.

Where is Michigan’s Largest Tree?

The tree with the largest girth is a black willow in Grand Traverse County, measuring 402 inches in girth

This tree is also considered to be one of the oldest in the state.

The Michigan Big Tree Program is a database listing some of the state’s largest trees.

The program has identified the ten tallest trees in Michigan, including the aforementioned blue ash, as well as an American elm that stands 146 feet tall in Wayne County, and a tulip tree/yellow poplar that stands 145 feet tall in the same county.
