THE mysteries of trees will be explored in a series of workshops and events at Exbury Gardens this summer.

As part of the Tree Listening Project, visitors have a unique opportunity to hear what’s going on inside a tree. Highly sensitive microphones are used to make the movement of the water audible on its way from the ground to the leaves. This runs until July 2nd.

Trees are also the focus of a two-day tree climbing competition on June 17-18, which will see professional arborists compete in a series of events and share more about the skills involved in tree work.

As part of the Christopher Hoare Tree Services event, visitors can try out a climbing wall and throwing line game. There will also be demonstrations of wood turning and carving, showing how sustainably sourced wood is used in traditional crafts.

Magnificent ‘veteran’ trees are the focus of a garden tour hosted by the Exbury garden team on 23 June.

Exbury Head Gardener Tom Clark said: “We love trees at Exbury – they provide the structure of our garden and provide shelter for many rare plants.

“They are also very important in their own right and we have some wonderful specimens from around the world in our unique corner of the New Forest.”
