Tree removal makes way for 5-week downtown Portsmouth utility project

PORTSMOUTH – Starting April 10, weather permitting, Market Street between Bow Street and Daniel Street will be closed to through traffic daily for about five weeks during the workweek to allow utilities and city construction crews to complete several projects. Commercial Alley is also affected.

The city announced that it is facilitating this utility work with participation from Eversource, Unitil, Comcast and Consolidated Communications to complete these repairs quickly and minimize disruption to the businesses and residents of Market Street and Commercial Alley.

The work includes:

  • Pending replacement of gas line and upgrading to gas supply from Market Square to Bow Street.
  • Installation of a new line by Eversource, Comcast and Consolidated under Commercial Alley.
  • City Utilities rerouted a small section of water main to fit a new manhole and liner in the sewer line.

The sidewalks on Market Street and access to Commercial Alley shops will remain open to pedestrian traffic, and deliveries during works and signage will help direct pedestrians to affected shops.

Work will take place during the project each week from Monday to Thursday from 7am to 5pm and Friday from 7am to 1pm. No work will be carried out over the weekend without notice, the city said, adding that every effort is being made to keep the street open every night, noting that Market Street closes from 1 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Monday 7:00 a.m. is open.
