CASS COUNTY, Texas (KSLA) — A large oak tree was uprooted Wednesday morning and fell onto the roof of a historic chapel in Cass County, Texas.
On April 5, severe weather swept through ArkLaTex and a tornado warning was issued in Cass County, Texas.
During the storm, a large oak tree uprooted near the historic Law’s Chapel Methodist Church and fell on the building at 4065 FM 2328. The tree caused significant damage, causing part of the roof to collapse into the chapel area.
“So we have damage on the inside, damage on the outside, and we’re in the process of contacting those who need to know so we can begin the cleanup,” said Pastor Mike Akin.
The Church has been active in worship and community outreach programs since 1853. Visit the website https://lawschapelmc.com/ to learn more about the church and see more photos of the building.
The church posted on its Facebook page that insurance has been contacted and a tree trimmer is on the way, but they are concerned about the rain as the hole in the roof cannot be covered until the tree is removed.
No one was in the church when the tree fell; Church leaders were notified by a passerby.
“And we still worship in the original structure, which has undergone some renovations over the years, and this I believe will be the latest renovation,” Akin said.
Cass County Judge Travis Ransom said the storm ripped through the middle of his county, toppling trees like the one at Law’s Chapel. He asks residents with damage to contact his office.
“That way we can document that in case we hit the threshold for government support. We want to make sure we document any possible damage,” Ransom said.
Worship services will continue to be held in the church, just not in the sanctuary.
“The weather may turn against us, but nothing will stop us from serving our Lord or this community,” Akin said.
