ATLANTA, Texas — An EF-0 tornado that swept through Cass County Wednesday morning uprooted a large oak tree and toppled it through the roof of a historic church in Atlanta, Texas.

Aside from the hole in the roof of The Law’s Chapel Methodist Church and a broken water main, the only real damage at the sanctuary was a single bench that the tornado lifted off the ground.

There was no one in the church at the time, but the entire congregation came immediately to help and cleared most of the rubble before the restoration company came out to assess the damage.

Sidney O’Rear, superintendent of Sunday School classes, said, “Every church in Cass County and in Texarkana has called and offered to help.”

Law’s Chapel Methodist Church is the oldest church in Cass County and began worship and outreach in 1853.

The service on Maundy Thursday, April 6th, is at 6:00 p.m. at the Family Life Center and on Easter Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.
