SOUTHEASTERN NC — Every Monday, Port City Daily provides updates on upcoming government meetings in the three-country region. If there is a topic of public interest, we include it below the listed session as well.

Monday, May 22nd

The Curriculum Committee of the New Hanover County Board of Education meets at 3:45 p.m. at the Board of Education Center, 1802 S. 15th St. Meetings can be livestreamed here. On the agenda are:

  • Desmos update (math)
  • Vocational technical training
  • Discussion on parenting resources

Pender County Opioid Prevention Task Force will be holding a public meeting at 6 p.m. at the Surf City Municipal Complex, 214 W. Florence Way. This will be an opportunity to discuss opioid use in Pender County and get input from residents on ways to prevent it.

The Southport Board of Aldermen will hold a budget work session at 9 a.m. at the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay St.

The Oak Island planning board meets at 9:00 a.m. in the council chambers at 4601 E. Oak Island Drive. Meetings can be live streamed here. On the agenda are:

  • Discussion of special use permits

The Belville Board of Commissioners will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the commissioner’s room at 63 River Road. An agenda was not published by the press.

Public comments are open regarding NC State Port AuthorityThe proposed project to improve vehicle congestion and transportation efficiency through a new intermodal facility. The Port of Wilmington is proposing construction of a dedicated area for loading and unloading containers onto and off the rail, which would include four 1,250-foot rail sidings on 9.7 acres of paved area surrounding the existing rail tracks to accommodate on either side of the tracks to provide storage and handling areas for new tracks. Three special reach stackers are used to load and unload railway wagons with additional reach for the inner track. A secure area near US Customs and Border Protection mandated radiation portals will allow for secondary inspections to allow safe loading and unloading of container boxes (to and from trains) in the container yard. The project will help shift nearly 250,000 container boxes from truck to rail over the next decade. Construction is expected to start in January 2024 and be completed in early 2025. Tuesday, May 23rd

The Carolina Beach City Council will be holding a workshop at 9 am in the council chambers at 1121 N. Lake Park Blvd. Meetings can be live streamed here. On the agenda are:

  • Flood and adjustment modeling work on Canal Drive
  • Budget statement from the city manager for the financial year 23/24

Pender County Commissioners will hold a budget work session at 4:00 p.m. at the Pender County Public Assembly Room, 805 S. Walker St. in Burgaw.

Pender County Board of Education will be holding an informational session at 6:00 p.m. in the Heide Trask High School auditorium on the proposed three-tiered ringer schedule and bus route system. Read the PCD coverage here.

The Brunswick County Board of Education will hold committee meetings beginning at 9 am, followed by budget work session in the conference room at the Center for Applied Sciences and Technology, 1109 Old Ocean Highway, Bolivia. Meetings can be live streamed here. The agenda of the working session includes:

  • Five-year capital improvement plan
  • Payroll plans for 2023-2024
  • Review of ESSER positions for 2023-2024

The City of Leland Planning Board Meeting will take place on May 23 at 6 p.m. Agenda items include the rezoning of Brunswick County owned lots, including a 26.51 hectare area along Mill Creek, north and east of the Holly Hills subdivision, from the existing R-6000 zoning, medium density residential to CD, nature reserve. In addition, approximately 5 acres along US Highway 74/76 and Fawnbrook Way will be proposed for conversion. The staff is proposing to redesignate the property from Brunswick County’s existing zoning from RR (Rural Residential) to Leland C-1 (General Commercial Business District). Wednesday May 24th

The Topsail Beach Planning Board meets at 10:00 am at the Assembly Building, 720 Channel Blvd. On the agenda is a review of the conditional rezoning of the south end of the island to make way for a family site near Serenity Point. Find out more about PCD coverage here.

The Oak Island City Council will be hosting a public hearing on the 2023-2024 Budget at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 4601 E. Oak Island Drive. Meetings can be live streamed here. An agenda was not published by the press.

The Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority (Wave) will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Forden Station, 505 Cando St. Agenda items include revising employee car allowance from $8,000 to $6,000 and approving PBMares LLP’s $38,500 auditing services, which are budgeted for FY23.
