As a Mainer for many years, the November election question about the creation of a state power authority occupies me a lot. I can’t think of anything more dangerous. When it is over we will wait years for the new government agency to be created and the price to be negotiated in court.
What is certain is that Pine Tree Power will be a government bureaucracy that makes all decisions about our power grid. We will have a huge debt burden that we will have to pass on to our children and grandchildren. That brings us to a point where lawmakers must decide whether to raise taxes or cut services to meet the state’s debt and interest payments.
Adding to the obvious risks and costs of Pine Tree Power are all the unintended consequences of a plan that has never been implemented on this scale across the country. Right now, I’m planning to vote no on the Pine Tree Power poll this November. There are far too many unknowns, and what we do know is scary.
