May 3, 2023 – Fourth graders in Lakewood put their personal touch on Westborough Park this week when they planted ‘Jeff’, ‘Angel’ and others – all new trees they named as part of Lakewood’s Arbor Day celebrations .

In addition to the Westborough plantings, Lakewood has received the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA Growth Award. In recognition of these accomplishments, Mayor Paul spoke with students and staff about the importance of a diverse canopy in the city and proclaimed April 28, 2023 as Lakewood Arbor Day.

Dana Coehelo of the State Forest Service and Luke Killoran of the Lakewood Forest Service were joined by US Forest Service mascots Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl to teach students the value of tree care, the importance of a diverse canopy, etc. the value that a thriving city forest for your community.

Students at K-8 School in Bear Creek planted six deciduous trees, bringing what they learned in the classroom to their community. Forest Manager Killoran said: “Today’s tree planting in Westborough Park is helping to create a healthier environment for future students and community members to enjoy.”

The students were divided into groups to plant trees throughout the park, which is close to their school. City of Lakewood officials walked each group through best practices, safety precautions, and setting up their seedlings for success. Each group planted the root ball with shovels, mulched the ball around the tree, and named each tree. Park staff staked the trees to anchor and protect their growth, while Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl lamented with the students to celebrate their attendance.

The Tree City USA Growth Award is presented by the Arbor Day Foundation to participating Tree City USA communities that demonstrate higher levels of tree care and community engagement during the calendar year. Lakewood was also recognized as a Tree City USA Award winner for the 41st time.
