STATEN ISLAND, NY – A FedEx delivery truck crashed into a tree in Rosebank on Sunday morning.
According to emergency radio transmissions, the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Colton Street.
The driver crashed into a tree before flattening a fence and becoming trapped in the vehicle, prompting a major emergency response.
Emergency services had to use the “Jaws of Life” device — a hydraulic rescue tool — to extricate the delivery driver from the vehicle, Transmissions said.
The FedEx van was seen with the front end crumpled and the driver’s door completely removed. The surrounding houses were apparently not damaged by the vehicle.
The motorist was transported by ambulance to Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, for trauma treatment, the FDNY said.
The homeowner of one of the two homes whose fence was destroyed by the van said it is not the first time he has seen this level of damage to his property.
“About 25 years ago, our fence was damaged by an accident that happened in the exact same spot,” said the homeowner, who chose not to give his name. “People race through here all the time, the speedometer doesn’t help there.”
The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
