Fallen Tree Blocks Lane of Fordham Boulevard; Chapel Hill Urges Detour

A fallen tree near the Chapel Hill and Durham city limits caused part of one of the region’s most popular streets to be closed Sunday morning.

An alert from the city of Chapel Hill and its emergency services team just before 10 a.m. said the tree was on both south lanes of Fordham Boulevard, also known as US 15-501. The area not far from Interstate 40 would be closed as the tree is being felled and removed.

But the city of Chapel Hill said the closure is between the two intersections of Fordham Boulevard with Eastowne Drive, which circles the road to UNC Health’s Eastowne campus. City officials suggested those arriving on Sunday consider a different route into the city or use Eastowne Drive as a detour from the lockdown.

It’s unclear when the tree fell across Fordham Boulevard – but it’s not the only case of downed trees this weekend in Chapel Hill. On Friday, during inclement weather in the Triangle, a tree fell, destroying power lines on Umstead Drive. The incident also resulted in the road being closed for several hours.
