Shanghai Municipal Medical Centers focus on local health services, particularly elderly care and children’s rehabilitation, to meet the increasing demands of an aging society.

It returned to normal trajectories after the pandemic, as many community medical centers expanded to include fever clinics and provided early treatment and interventions for vulnerable and high-risk groups.

As a vision of Huan Hongmei, the director of GuMei Community Health Service Center of Minhang District in Shanghai, the center provides “tree of life” health services for residents of all ages and from birth to death. It is a “3H system” which refers to the integration of health, home and hospital.

The Gumei Center in Minhang District provides hospice care, postpartum care, children’s rehabilitation, cognitive disorder treatment for the elderly and traditional Chinese medical services, which are sometimes used to ease the pressure of office patients, the Shanghai Daily learned on Monday.

On the third floor of the center there is a room for hospice care with five beds. It helps people to better cope with the last part of their journey in life, both mentally and physically. The center can offer religion and various services to elderly patients and their family members.

In an aging society, elderly care is an important task for Shanghai’s community medical centers, which help relieve limited medical resources and pressure on family caregivers.

It has an increasing demand today as about a third of the residents of Gumei Township are now people over 60, Huan said.
