Professional tree climbers compete this weekend here in the Scenic City. We spoke to some tree specialists about their safety techniques at the 41st Annual ISA Southern Tree Climbing Championships.

Challengers from 8 different states compete in a series of timed events.

The winner will represent the Southern Chapter at the International Tree Climbing Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Fletcher Harper is one of dozens of professional arborists, or tree specialists, competing to be crowned Southern Chapter Champion.

According to Harper, one of the mock incidents is called an arrow rescue, demonstrating her ability to rescue an injured climber.

Harper owns his own tree care business and knows it can be a dangerous job.

“There is no real training for arborists or tree climbers, you have to inspire it somehow, a lot of people look at Youtube and Google. Stuff like that, these contests are invaluable for training new people,” Harper said.

In addition to training new climbers, Harper hopes viewers will learn the importance of safety when it comes to tree care and hire professionals if they have work to do.

The championship continues Sunday at East Lake Park, with events starting at 8 a.m.
