PHILADELPHIA — The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) will celebrate Earth Day by planting trees throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan area April 20-24, 2023, with support from more than 80 of their PHS Tree Tenders groups, neighborhood volunteers and community organizations. Over 1,400 trees are to be planted.

PHS promotes healthier, greener communities by expanding and enhancing tree canopies in neighborhoods throughout the Philadelphia area through this biannual initiative.

Volunteers interested in getting involved in tree planting can register at: https://phsonline.org/programs/tree-programs/get-involved

Tree canopy, or the amount of land shaded by trees, has been shown in studies to improve health and communities, including a decrease in heat-related illnesses and lower rates of violence. It is believed that ‘good’ canopy cover accounts for 30% of the total land area. The city of Philadelphia has only 20% network coverage overall, and in certain boroughs it is only 2.5%. These shockingly low numbers have prompted PHS to raise tree canopies, particularly in areas with few trees and above-average temperatures.

No prior experience is required to participate in the tree planting process, which typically takes 3 hours at the designated location. A group leader from PHS Tree Tenders will be present at all planting sites to guide and encourage the volunteers. Everyone is asked to bring hand sanitizer, gloves, closed-toe shoes, a water bottle, and a shovel if you have one. Planting tools such as shovels, pickaxes, brooms, garbage bags and other items are provided on site. Specific details for each location are available through the website. Attendees are also advised to dress appropriately as the plantings will take place rain or shine.
