Tony John Tilley, 39, of Parker Close, Wellington, pleaded guilty to using a mobile phone while driving his vehicle on Bristol Road, Bridgwater on March 15 last year.

When he appeared before Taunton Magistrates’ Court he was fined six points on his driving licence.

That was enough to exceed the maximum limit for a ban.

However, the judges decided not to issue a ban after learning that all of Tilley’s 20 employees depend on him for their livelihood.

He was told, “Without your license, your business and employees would be compromised.”

Tilley was fined £250 and ordered to pay a victim’s allowance of £34 and cover prosecution costs of £85.

He was told he had until June 13 to settle the entire £369 court bill.
