Kingston Police are warning residents about a recent roof scam. They say that on February 28, 2023 the victim, a senior living in the 200 block of Victoria Street, was approached by a work team claiming to be in the area to complete roof repairs.

These individuals indicated that the victim’s roof looked in need of repair. The crew climbed onto the victim’s roof and removed some of the eaves. They then gave the victim an estimate totaling $7,500 for materials and labor.

The victim paid these people in cash after going to the bank. The older victim became suspicious of the transaction and attempted to cancel the work order the next day. The scammer said he had already ordered material and would come by March 1 to return the victim’s money at his apartment. The scammer never returned to refund the victim.

Kingston Police wish to warn other potential victims in the community about this scam and remind the public to never make full payment upfront for an incomplete repair. Additionally, it’s always best to check references of potential repair companies on-demand or online, especially if they’re visiting a home unsolicited. Kingston Police are hoping that anyone who has had a similar incident may be able to describe the impostor, the crew, or any vehicles involved.
