Protection, insulation, durability and aesthetics… all of these desires fall within the realm of roofing and cladding. While protecting a building and its occupants from the elements such as rain, snow, wind or sun is ideally the primary purpose of roofs and cladding, their role in the built environment goes much further. Apart from that, the geographic diversity of India has led to the use of numerous materials for roofing and cladding, such as clay, concrete, metal, stone, straw, brick, terracotta and glass.

Facade cladding is evolving rapidly, its functional properties are being improved and its aesthetics are becoming more contemporary and intelligent. “Facades are the key elements for beautifying buildings,” he says Gaurav Sanghavi, Partner, Pentaspace Design Studio. “Recent trends include perforated parametric designs, fiber reinforced polymers (FRP), green facades and solar cells or PV solar facades. Three of the more exciting facade technologies that have been developed are electrochromic glass facades (or smart glass), kinematic facade and transparent canopy with solar panels.”

Accordingly Mahendra Pawar, Founder of Zen Bull Architects, Technological innovations have brought new options including chilled roofs, green roofs and solar shingles. “Cool roofing materials are designed to reflect as much of the sun’s heat away from the building as possible, rather than absorbing it like most traditional roofing materials. This helps keep your property cooler which in turn increases its energy efficiency as less energy is required to cool it. It also extends the life of a roof by minimizing damage from sunlight…
