The incident was reported around 4:04 p.m. at the GAF facility, located north of State Route 56 at 5080 West.

Firefighters arrived to find stacks of paper-backed foam roofing insulation material catching fire just outside the north side of the building.

“This is the product they make here — foam roof insulation — that caught fire, with a paper backing,” said Mike Phillips, Cedar City Fire Chief.

Crews were quick to put down the flames with jets of water, Phillips told Cedar City News at the scene. A little over an hour after the operation, the firefighters cleared away the equipment and searched for hotspots.

No injuries were reported. All employees working in the building were safely evacuated after the fire alarms went off, Phillips said.

Although some external damage to the building was visible, the incident was unlikely to disrupt operations inside the facility, company officials at the site said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Phillips said.

Phillips said about 33 Cedar City Fire Department employees responded to the fire, including four fire trucks and a ladder truck, as well as three command and one support personnel.

This report is based on preliminary information from fire officials and may not contain the full scope of the findings.
