Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning celebrates National Craft Day on May 3rd by encouraging young people to consider a career in the craft industry.

“For years we’ve been telling students that if they want an exciting career that pays well, they have to go to college, and that’s not always true,” he said Michael Peter, owner of Petri plumbing, heating, cooling & drain cleaning. “But the truth is, college isn’t for everyone. Some people just want a career where they can start making money, get a steady job, and good pay without going into debt to get a degree. And now, with baby boomers retiring in record numbers, there are more vacancies in the craft industry than can be filled.”

According to a study by State of Home Services, 52% of home services recruiters had difficulty hiring, compared to 30% of recruiters in other occupations.

Petri said the industry needed to recruit more at the junior high and high school levels to let teenagers know they could go to trade school after high school for much less than the cost of a typical four-year college.

“Trade school tends to be cheaper, and you can start making money in less time than graduating from a typical university,” he said. “In addition, most skilled workers earn more in their first job than college graduates. If you send your kids to trade school, you can have less college debt and more income.”

Petri said parents, educators and government officials should push to introduce more young people to the craft industry.

“Whether it’s working in the HVAC or plumbing industry, building a house or cutting hair, these are jobs that can’t be outsourced,” he said. “These are the people we call to fix our homes, our cars and our appliances. These are the industries that bind our country together and we should encourage more people to join their ranks.”
