“The reasonable announcement by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) of 1 January 2019 to transition to lower-lead requirements for plumbing products, national employers’ association Ai Group said today.
“Five years ago, ABCB, with support from industry, recognized the need for a new regulatory regime for sanitary products.
“Members recognized that their investment in transforming their businesses would bring health benefits to the Australian public.
“We are pleased that the ABCB has considered our statements to address manufacturing schedule issues caused by unforeseen delays with the approval of the trademark to be affixed to all products.
“With the approval of this mark, which is expected within days, sanitary products can be manufactured and legally placed on the market by manufacturers and suppliers.
“The ABCB decision also reduces the risk of an uncompetitive market which may have resulted in less compliant product being available and the amount of product being sent to landfill.
“The decision shows that positive outcomes for consumers are achieved when government actively consults and listens to industry,” Mr Willox said.
