The project was carried out to make Midland a slightly better place to live. Letters to Barley are not from actual applicants but represent typical requests.

dear barley,

We moved into an older house last year. With three teenagers we were so glad to have more space. After living here for half a year, we realized that the shower in the boys’ bathroom was not working. We couldn’t call a plumber at the time because we couldn’t afford one. Our budget was pretty tight after buying our home. We just told the boys not to use that shower.

My husband and I both work during the school year. I drive a school bus but had to take time off to diagnose a health issue I was having.

We have never asked for financial help. Our sons do various chores that their father works to help us with and they come home dirty. A working bathroom/shower just isn’t enough. Could you help fix the shower? I have attached an estimate from a local plumber. Thank you very much.

Dear friend,

I’m sending a check to the plumber you contacted to pay for the broken shower. Congratulations on moving into your own home. Becoming a homeowner comes with various frustrations. I applaud your work ethic and flexibility in dealing with this challenge. Hopefully a second working shower makes life a little easier for all of you.
